The National Health Service (NHS) in England supports us from “cradle to grave”. A vast healthcare network that serves millions daily. But what does that typical day look like?
Every day, 1.3 million people consult a GP, while over 275,000 patients attend outpatient appointments. Emergency services buzz with activity as 35,000 people call 999, and 44,000 individuals arrive at accident and emergency (A&E) departments, with nearly a third admitted into hospital care. For the most critical cases, 650 patients enter critical care—a testament to the NHS’s lifesaving capacity.
By the Numbers: The NHS's Global Standing
England may only rank as the 26th most populous country globally, but its NHS is the sixth largest employer in the world, employing around 1.4 million full-time staff. From doctors and nurses to paramedics and administrative support.
The NHS is ranked 18th globally for healthcare system performance.
NHS Financial Snapshot
Funding for the NHS comes from the Department of Health and Social Care, with a staggering £192 billion budget for 2024/25. Staff salaries and medicines dominate expenses, accounting for nearly 95% of the budget. The average cost of a 10-minute GP consultation is £56, while emergency procedures can reach tens of thousands of pounds. For instance, an appendix removal for a child costs £3,603, and a coronary bypass may exceed £14,500.
Challenges and Workforce Gaps
The NHS is not without its struggles. With 100,700 vacancies reported in early 2024, staffing shortages challenge the system's ability to meet growing demand. Meanwhile, 7.47 million patients await elective care, some enduring delays longer than 18 weeks.
Despite these obstacles, the NHS continues to perform under immense pressure. Nearly 318 million GP appointments were recorded in 2021/22, a staggering 54% of all NHS activity.
The Path Ahead
As the NHS marches forward with a commitment to its mission, its challenges underscore the need for innovation (a subject close to our hearts at Glow), investment, and support. Innovation will not deliver clinical improvements without the will to adopt technology. We’re proud to have delivered improvements, in our specific area of interest, NHS Community Lone Worker App & Systems.
From ambitious sustainability goals to workforce recruitment initiatives, the NHS aims to remain a beacon of hope and care for millions who rely on its services every day and we’re delighted to work alongside such an important mission at this significant scale.
